Dromolaxia factory fire claims life of 63-year-old electrician

Relevant News

Authorities are working on three fronts following Sunday’s devastating fire at a polyurethane manufacturing plant in Dromolaxia’s industrial area, which resulted in one fatality.

Emergency services are planning to recover the charred remains of a 63-year-old electrician today, after being unable to do so on Sunday due to the building’s dangerous condition.

Officials will also assess the structural integrity of the facility and secure hazardous materials before investigating the cause of the fatal blaze.

Five people were working at the factory when the fire broke out.

Four employees managed to escape, with one suffering burns to their hand.

All four were taken to Larnaca General Hospital with respiratory problems, where the burn victim remains under treatment.

The victim, who was performing electrical work, became trapped in a different area of the factory.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire started elsewhere in the building, though the exact cause remains unclear.

The fire service deployed significant resources, including 11 fire engines and special disaster response units from EMAK and Vasilikos Fire Station.

The blaze posed a significant threat to neighbouring factories due to the petroleum-based materials involved, with firefighters working to cool fuel and gas tanks to prevent explosions.

The fire is now fully under control, fire service spokesperson Andreas Kettis announced late Sunday afternoon.

The Ministry of Labour has issued an entry prohibition order due to concerns about the building’s potential collapse.
