Two key dates to set the course on Cyprus problem talks

UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo will visit Cyprus and the region in February to prepare for informal five-party talks on the Cyprus issue scheduled to take place in Switzerland, sources told philenews.

The informal five-party meeting is expected to be held between March 17-19, just before the European Council meeting on March 20-21, which UN Secretary-General António Guterres is invited to attend, according to well-placed sources.

DiCarlo’s regional tour will include visits to Nicosia and the three guarantor powers. Her visit will focus specifically on preparing for the five-party conference, rather than addressing other matters such as the upcoming Monday meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Ersin Tatar regarding crossing points.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have expressed concerns over the UN Secretary-General’s recent reports on his good offices mission and UNFICYP.

AKEL warned that the prolonged negotiation deadlock “serves the occupying power’s aim to finalise the division of our homeland and people”.

DEPA President Marios Garoyian noted that while the reports maintain commitment to basic principles of international law, they also demonstrate an “equidistant stance between victim and perpetrator on other issues”.
