Seven arrested over Latsia attack on teenager due in court Wednesday

Nicosia CID arrested seven people, six of them minors, on Tuesday after a 16-year-old reported being attacked and beaten by a group of young people in Latsia on Friday night.

The suspects, one adult and six minors, were arrested on warrants issued by a district judge. They are suspected mainly of assault and causing bodily harm, and are expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court on Wednesday, when police will seek a remand order.

The arrests followed a statement the 16-year-old gave police on Monday, naming some of those involved. Others were identified from a video of the attack that was made public and from other footage that CID officers collected from nearby premises.

All the procedures required by law were followed in arresting the minors, in the presence of their guardians or lawyers. Each is expected to be asked to give a statement on the allegations against them.

Police are also looking for the person who filmed the video so that they can give a statement, and further arrests have not been ruled out if more evidence and testimony emerges.

The incident appears to be linked to personal differences, but this is still being investigated, and the suspects will be able to give their own account if they wish.
