The prisoner, who is wanted in Sweden for alleged fraud amounting to approximately 90 million euros, escaped yesterday afternoon from the private clinic where he had been receiving treatment for acute gastroenteritis and chest pains for the past two weeks. Police spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou told philenews that the suspect, who was handcuffed to his bed, managed to detach the protective bed rail, freeing one side of the handcuffs, and escaped through a window into a semi-basement parking area.

Following the escape, police launched a manhunt while the contract special police officer responsible for guarding the prisoner and the duty officer who provided instructions were suspended.
