A Swedish businessman wanted for alleged multi-million euro fraud has been recaptured in Larnaca following an operation by the city’s Criminal Investigation Department, Drug Law Enforcement Unit and rapid response team.

Hans Jonny Uven, 49, was arrested after escaping through a window of a private clinic where he had been held under guard. The businessman, from Gällivare, had managed to detach his handcuffs from the hospital bed’s protective railing before fleeing.

Uven, who was initially arrested at Larnaca airport on 6 December under a European arrest warrant, is wanted in Sweden for alleged embezzlement and fictitious transactions. According to investigators, his companies reported revenue of 1.9 billion kronor in 2022, though only 130 million kronor came from external sales.

The incident has triggered an internal police investigation, with both the officer and special police contractor responsible for guarding the suspect being suspended. The Chief of Police has ordered a disciplinary investigation and requested a detailed incident report.

Prior to his escape, Uven had been receiving treatment for acute gastroenteritis and chest pain for two weeks, having been hospitalised on 9 December. Police said Cyprus was intended as a transit point in his journey to another country.
