Police have suspended a contract special officer who was guarding a fraud suspect who escaped from a private clinic in Larnaca where he was receiving medical treatment under police supervision.
The 49-year-old fugitive, who was being held for extradition to Sweden on financial crime charges, fled the clinic on Sunday afternoon where he was being treated for gastroenteritis and chest pains.
The suspect was initially arrested on December 6 at Larnaca Airport on a european arrest warrant issued by Swedish authorities. He was in custody pending completion of extradition proceedings when he managed to escape police supervision at the medical facility.
A contract special police officer has been placed on suspension following the incident. The circumstances of the escape are under investigation.
The fugitive was detained earlier this month as part of international cooperation between Cypriot and Swedish law enforcement agencies. Police have launched a manhunt and are working with European authorities to locate the escaped suspect.
