Five suspects, including four prison officers and a trainee police officer, appeared before the Nicosia District Court on Friday in connection with approximately 300,000 state documents discovered at a prison officer’s residence.
The case investigator told the court that some documents were confidential, whilst others were classified, causing considerable concern about the security breach.
According to the investigator’s testimony, the documents were found in fabric bags and had been removed from the prison administration offices using a trolley.
All five suspects contested their detention through their lawyers, with proceedings continuing to determine whether they will remain in custody.
The case was uncovered during an investigation into a separate matter involving allegations that a shop was operating in a specific prison wing with the same guard’s knowledge. The guard is currently facing charges related to that case.
Authorities are investigating potential offences including abuse of power, breach of official secrecy, violation of data protection laws, theft by a public official, and illegal possession of property.
