A Nicosia court on Tuesday remanded a 37-year-old livestock farm owner for six days in an investigation into labour exploitation, threats of violence and related offences, after a 73-year-old man was found working at his farm in poor conditions.
Officers from the police Office for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings arrested the man on Monday. They had received information about the possible labour exploitation of an elderly person.
Officers went to the farm in Nicosia district, where they found the 73-year-old cleaning the premises. He was taken to the office’s headquarters, treated as a possible victim of human trafficking, and gave a statement about his working and living conditions at the farm.
The owner was arrested later that day in a coordinated operation with Nicosia CID and the Nicosia Crime Prevention Squad (OPE). Officers searched the farm under a court warrant and seized a number of items linked to the offences under investigation.
The suspect appeared before Nicosia District Court on Tuesday, and the investigation continues.
