Police arrested a prison officer and two other individuals on Thursday morning as part of a corruption investigation into an unofficial “shop” operating within the Central Prisons, authorities said.

Members of the police headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Department executed arrest and search warrants at the prison facility, taking the prison officer into custody, according to philenews sources.

Police investigations reportedly revealed the operation of an unofficial retail outlet, described as functioning like a “kiosk”, through which various items were sold to inmates with the alleged involvement of the prison officer.

During a subsequent search of the prison officer’s residence, investigators discovered additional items currently under examination as potential evidence, sources close to the investigation told philenews.

Authorities also reported finding numerous prison-related documents covering a specific time period during their search.

The three suspects are expected to appear before court later today where police will request their detention pending further investigation.

In recent months, there has been a wave of corruption cases within the police force, with four additional officers facing serious charges.
