Negotiations on new checkpoints between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities showed no progress during Thursday’s meeting between negotiators, ahead of next week’s planned leaders’ summit.
UN Special Representative Colin Stewart will meet President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar today to discuss the upcoming bilateral meeting, scheduled for either February 7 or 8.
The meeting between negotiators Menelaos Menelaou and Gunes Onar yielded no breakthrough on new crossing points, despite Tatar’s earlier suggestions of possible developments.
Tatar met Tuesday with Turkish Cypriot Nicosia “mayor” Mehmet Harmanci to discuss increasing traffic congestion at existing crossings. He indicated that Harmanci could consult with his Greek Cypriot counterpart to develop proposals.
The Turkish Cypriot leader said they had not received a response to their proposal for a crossing at Mia Milia, noting the Greek Cypriot side’s counter-proposal for a crossing in the Louroujina-Lympia area.
He rejected the Greek Cypriot suggestion for transit crossings, arguing they would not facilitate mutual movement.
UN Deputy Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo is expected to visit Cyprus on February 10, following the leaders’ meeting.
