Australia has arranged evacuation flights from Lebanon for its citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family members, Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference, Wong confirmed that the government had secured two flights to Cyprus, scheduled to depart on Saturday, with a total capacity of 500 seats.
“We have been working this week to secure seats on flights,” Wong said. “Some seats were secured on Monday and Tuesday, and I can confirm that we have secured 80 seats on flights that are leaving today.”
However, Wong noted that only 35 of the 80 available seats on Thursday’s flights had been taken up by eligible individuals.
Australian officials are urging eligible individuals to take advantage of these flights, as future evacuation opportunities may be limited.
