Cyprus has reaffirmed its commitment to serving as a safe haven for citizens fleeing conflict zones in the region, Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos announced on Monday.

The country has activated its “Estia” evacuation plan in response to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Kombos confirmed that Cyprus is prepared to assist in the evacuation of citizens from Lebanon, following similar plans by France and Belgium. The country has also been actively involved in the ongoing crisis in Sudan and is monitoring the situation in Israel closely.

“We all hope it won’t be necessary, but if it is, Cyprus will continue to serve as a security bridge to facilitate the safe evacuation of citizens from any conflict zone in our region,” he said.

While Cyprus has been working on establishing a humanitarian corridor to deliver aid to Gaza, the recent escalation of violence has complicated these efforts, he added.

The government is exploring alternative methods of delivering aid, including a mid-term option that is already in place.
