The Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) successfully repelled a cyberattack on Friday evening, according to Giorgos Petrou, Chairman of the Board of Directors.
This incident marks the third attack on Cypriot systems in the past two days. Bank of Cyprus and the Larnaca Airport have also been targeted.
“EAC continuously monitors the security of its systems and has adopted strict measures to protect its digital infrastructure,” Petrou told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).
He added, “Like any other organisation with critical infrastructure, we have developed robust protocols to prevent and respond to potential cyberattacks”.
Petrou emphasised the authority’s priorities: “The safety and uninterrupted operation of our services remains our top priority”.
The power authority is expected to release an official statement later today, providing further details on the incident.
On Tuesday, cybersecurity firm Odyssey issued a threat warning for Cyprus, citing an imminent attack on the country’s critical infrastructure by the hacking group LulzSec Black.
Odyssey said the politically motivated cyberattack is scheduled for October 17, targeting government, financial, and critical services across Cyprus.
The threat is believed to be in response to Cyprus’s relationship with Israel, according to the cybersecurity experts.
