SCREENING
Nicosia, Pantheon. The Friends of Cinema Club screens ‘Primavera’, directed by Damiano Michieletto. In 18th-century Venice, Cecilia lives in the city’s largest orphanage, where the most talented girls are trained in music. A gifted violinist, she knows she is destined for a wealthy marriage, until a new music teacher arrives: the famous Antonio Vivaldi. (2025, 110 min) In Italian with Greek subtitles.
Limassol, Rio, 8pm. The Limassol Film Club, with the Palestinian Independent Film Festival (PIFF), screens ‘With Hasan in Gaza’, directed by Kamal Aljafari, as part of Palestine Cinema Days Around the World 2026. In 2001, the Palestinian director travelled to Gaza to find Abdel Rahim, a man he had met in 1989 in a juvenile prison when he was a teenager. With no address, and nothing to go on beyond what he remembered from that time, he crossed the city from north to south with his driver, Hasan Elbubu. The footage was shot over two days in November and stayed on three MiniDV tapes for 20 years. When Aljafari found the tapes again, he decided to make the film from them alone.
AWARDS
Nicosia, Discovery Hall, University of Nicosia, 7pm. The Cypriot studies journal The Cyprus Review holds the ceremony for its Annual Book Awards (CRABA 2026), for books published in 2025.

LECTURE
Nicosia, University of Cyprus, Central Academy Area, Kallipoleos Avenue, Wing E, 7.30pm. The University of Cyprus Archaeological Research Unit hosts a lecture by archaeologist and art historian Anna Marangou, titled ‘Cesnola, Richter and Magda: two antiquities looters and an amazing woman’.
The lecture looks at the life and work of Luigi Palma di Cesnola (1832-1904), an Italian sent to the island as consul for the United States and Russia. During his 11 years in Cyprus he dug at countless archaeological sites, and his collection grew to 35,573 objects. He later became director of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, where much of the collection went on display.
Max Ohnefalsch-Richter (1850-1917) came to Cyprus from Germany as a journalist to cover the British conquest of the island. He stayed for 12 years, dug everywhere and sold what he took from Cypriot soil to Europe’s biggest museums.
Magda Ohnefalsch-Richter (1873-1922), his wife, was a professional photographer who spoke Greek and Turkish. She was interested in the island and its Greek character, its customs and traditions, its politics, relations with Turkish Cypriots, religious ceremonies and the behaviour of Cypriots in general.
All Monday lectures are open to the public. Online attendance requires prior registration.
