Animal Party backs Paphos protest over poisoning and shooting of animals

Relevant News

A protest against animal cruelty will be held at Paphos harbour on Sunday, 1 November, at 4pm, with the backing of Animal Party Cyprus.

The party said it was supporting the peaceful demonstration in response to a call for collective action to protect animals. It said that poisoning, shooting and abandoning animals were illegal but still happened every day.

Laws to protect animal welfare already exist, the party said, and called for Cyprus’s animal protection law, 46(I)/1994, to be properly enforced.

It urged the government and the relevant authorities to adopt zero tolerance towards abuse, prosecute offenders more strictly and ensure justice for animals that suffer.

The party called on members of the public, animal welfare groups and anyone concerned to take part, and encouraged protesters to bring banners.

Background

The protest follows a string of reported animal welfare cases in the Paphos district. Earlier this month, the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation called for an investigation after a pregnant cat reportedly died after being trapped in Kato Paphos. Paphos Animal Police are investigating that case. There have been multiple reports about poisonings and animal shootings.
