UN envoy María Ángela Holguín said on Friday she was optimistic that an enlarged 5+1 meeting on Cyprus could be held before the end of the year. That depends on progress being made on confidence-building measures, methodology and issues of substance.
Asked whether she was interested in the post of UN Secretary-General, Holguín said she was not.
The Secretary-General’s personal envoy for Cyprus was speaking after meeting President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace. She described the meeting as good and said she would meet Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Monday.
“You know that we are pushing and we keep pushing,” Holguín said. She added that Secretary-General António Guterres had asked her to see whether progress could be made on the Cyprus problem until the very last moment of his term.
She said she had wanted to hear from Christodoulides about his recent meeting with Erhurman, and that it was very positive the two leaders were meeting in this way.
Holguín will hold a trilateral meeting with the two leaders on 9 November. “I am here, I am optimistic and I hope we can achieve something next week,” she said.
Asked specifically about a 5+1 meeting before the end of the year, she said: “I am optimistic, if there is progress on confidence-building measures, on methodology and on some issues of substance, and if we manage to achieve these, we will have the 5+1 meeting.”
