The contractor’s machinery for Peyia’s mobile desalination unit has begun work, with drilling equipment now visible at the Potima site where the mobile unit is scheduled to be installed.

The specialised drilling machinery arrived at the site on Saturday to conduct field work for the transport and installation of the mobile unit, which is estimated to be operational within four months.

The machinery is already visible to those travelling along the Coral Bay-Kato Paphos coastal avenue.

Paphos Water Development Department Provincial Engineer Charis Kasioulis told philenews that beyond construction work for the prefabricated structures that will comprise the mobile unit, machinery transferred to the area has begun work on examining the methodology for water extraction from the sea.

Drilling methodology chosen

Kasioulis clarified that it has been decided seawater extraction will not be done by placing pipes running from the sea to the unit, but through drilling that will send seawater to the facilities.

The drilling machinery is beginning this preliminary work to ensure everything is tested and ready for seawater transfer to the mobile unit once it is placed at the site, he emphasised.

Dam repair inspection continues

Kasioulis also revealed that experts dealing with repairing damage caused at Mavrokolymbos dam will visit the site today for a final inspection of the methodology to be selected for repairs.

The department head in Paphos emphasised that experts have had all the data regarding damage caused and possible solutions that can be applied since the dam’s drainage.

During today’s visit to Mavrokolymbos, they will conduct a final examination of the situation to submit the solution they recommend so the dam can safely return to operation.

The experts will be accompanied on their site visit by a Water Department team under Kasioulis and Agriculture Ministry officials.
