No breakthrough yet in Mavrokolympos dam repairs

Engineers and technicians from the Water Development Department (WDD) continue their assessment efforts at the Mavrokolympos dam following its evacuation, while uncertainty remains about when and how the damage will be permanently repaired as water concerns intensify ahead of summer months.

Officials maintain that necessary planning is proceeding appropriately given the complexity and severity of the issue, though local stakeholders have expressed growing concern about immediate water supply challenges.

Significant volumes of silt must be cleared, particularly around the dam’s safety gate, and all necessary actions must be taken not only to repair the damage but also to ensure similar failures don’t occur in the future, WDD officials stated.

The engineering team is currently evaluating several technical approaches with decisions expected in the coming days regarding the preferred repair methodology.

Department representatives emphasised they are seeking solutions that would facilitate both future maintenance and emergency interventions.

Officials noted this specific technical challenge has no precedent in Cyprus, attributing the damage to a failure in the ventilation conduit system. They specifically contested claims that inadequate maintenance contributed to the problem.

As summer approaches, the extended timeline for repairs has heightened concerns among residents and stakeholders who recognise the significant water volume losses will not be easily replaced in the short term.
