Today’s meeting between negotiators Menelaos Menelaou and Gunes Onar could prove decisive for proposed new crossing points across Cyprus, as Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar hints at potential collapse of the initiative.

Tatar, speaking at a development programme event attended by Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, preemptively blamed President Christodoulides for the impasse, citing disagreements over Greek Cypriot movement through the occupied north.

He recalled his proposal for crossings at Mia Milia and Louroujina during their previous meeting.

Meanwhile, leaders of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, meeting at Ledra Palace, expressed concern about the outcome of the January 20 leaders’ meeting.

They urged both sides to overcome obstacles regarding UN proposals for new crossing points, viewing them as crucial for building inter-communal trust.

UN Assistant Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo is scheduled to meet both leaders on February 10, while UN Special Representative Colin Stewart will hold separate meetings with them on Friday.

Stewart will first meet with negotiators Menelaou and Onar on Thursday.
