A neighbouring business owner has described the moments as a deadly fire engulfed a factory in Dromolaxia, Larnaca killing a 63-year-old worker.
Nicos Demosthenous, who owns an adjacent property, told philenews that despite warnings, the factory owner Michalis re-entered the building. “They called out to him. Michalis went back inside… and then it happened”, he said, his voice breaking with emotion.
“What value does metal have compared to human life?” Demosthenous questioned. He said he first spotted the fire on security cameras and rushed to the scene with a water hose to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighbouring properties.
The witness explained he helped firefighters scale a wall to access the site. The fire spread rapidly, with firefighting units increasing from five to 11 vehicles as the situation escalated.
“I feared it would spread. It’s a carpentry workshop with flammable materials”, Demosthenous said, adding that he only learned about people being trapped inside after he had begun fighting the fire.
