The Bank of Cyprus successfully thwarted a cyber attack targeting its websites on Friday evening, the bank said in a statement.

Around 18:30 Friday, the bank’s websites were subjected to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, which aimed to render them inaccessible.

“The attack was successfully countered, and the websites are operational”, the statement read.

The bank did not provide further details about the origin of the attack or any potential impact on its services.

This incident marks the third attack on Cypriot systems in the past two days, highlighting growing concerns over cybersecurity in the country. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) and the Larnaca Airport have also been targeted.

On Tuesday, cybersecurity firm Odyssey issued a threat warning for Cyprus, citing an imminent attack on the country’s critical infrastructure by the hacking group LulzSec Black.

Odyssey said the politically motivated cyberattack is scheduled for October 17, targeting government, financial, and critical services across Cyprus.

The threat is believed to be in response to Cyprus’s relationship with Israel, according to the cybersecurity experts.
