In a protest outside the village’s elementary school on Sunday morning, residents of Konia, Paphos called for the withdrawal of the license for a 5G antenna installation that has been in operation since December 14, 2023.
Protesters displayed placards with messages such as “Keep 5G antennas away from our children” and “No 5G in our school.”
Residents had previously written to the President of the Republic, the President of the House of Representatives, the Minister of Education, the Minister of the Interior, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, the District Officer of Paphos, and the company responsible for the antenna, expressing their opposition.
They affirm their desire to have the antenna removed from their area, citing the violation of their freedoms and rights as taxpayers. This dissatisfaction prompted them to stage a protest today.
Furthermore, residents highlight that in other communities and municipalities, residents were given the opportunity to be informed about the intention to install 5G antennas and express their objections through the procedures of the respective community councils.
The community leader of Konia has also voiced opposition to the placement of the antenna in the specific location.
They argue that the placement of the antenna in such a visibly prominent location, on the central avenue of the village, disrupts the daily tranquillity of the entire village and disturbs the natural landscape.
In addition, they noted that installing the antenna on the roof of a two-story building at the entrance of the village, in a quiet neighbourhood with single-family houses, undermines the village’s character, environmental features, and the natural harmony of their area. They point out that in other regions, antennas are not placed in such prominently visible locations.
They also refer to a 2016 report by the then Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of the Child, Leda Koursoumba, which mentions studies showing a correlation between specific forms of cancer and exposure to electromagnetic fields.
Residents state that if necessary, all residents of the village and the surrounding area will resort to legal action.
