Residents of Konia in Paphos are expressing their discontent over the installation of a 5G technology antenna in a residential area of their community.
A group of Konia residents has signed and sent a memorandum of protest to the President of the Republic, the President of the House of Representatives, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Deputy Minister of Research, the Paphos District Officer, and the company that owns the antenna.
They emphasize that before any permit is issued, a thorough inspection of the area should take place.
According to the memorandum, the installation concerns a sparsely populated area with exclusively detached houses.
The memorandum states that residents of the area and the Konia Community Council should have been informed in advance, as the council was not notified of the antenna’s placement, thus not allowing them to express their opinions, as was done in other communities and municipalities.
Residents argue that the installation of the antenna in such a prominently visible location, on the central avenue of Konia at the entrance of the village where all residents pass daily, disrupts the psychological tranquillity of residents and violates the natural landscape with an eyesore at the entrance of the village.
Additionally, residents point out that placing the antenna on the rooftop of a two-story building changes the village’s appearance, environmental character, and the natural harmony of their area.
They also note that, if necessary, both they and the parents of children forced to live within 200 meters of the antenna will seek justice.
For these reasons, residents have announced that they will stage a protest this coming Sunday at 10:00 am at the Konia Elementary School.
