A record 167 candidacies have been submitted for Limassol ahead of the May 24 parliamentary elections, Returning Officer Emily Dionysiou announced on Wednesday.
The nominations, which closed on May 6, come from 17 party lists and three independent candidates. Of the total, 120 candidates are men (71.9%) and 47 are women (28.1%).
A poll conducted by Kathimerini and published at the weekend put DISY narrowly ahead on 20.4%, followed by AKEL on 18.5% and ELAM on 12.6%. Direct Democracy Cyprus, led by MEP Fidias Panayiotou, was forecast at 5.7% — its weakest showing since the party’s establishment — while Volt recorded 4.2%. DIKO, at 7.4%, and EDEK, at 2.3%, were both forecast to record the worst results in their respective party histories. The Ecologists were on 2.1%, a figure that would leave the movement without parliamentary representation for the first time since 1996.
