Justice Minister Costas Fytiris said on Monday he had been briefed by Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis on developments in the Sandy affair and would update the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, when decisions on how to handle the case are expected to be taken.
Fytiris made the comments on the sidelines of the Fire Safety Week 2026 Opening Ceremony, in response to questions from journalists.
The Sandy affair centres on allegations brought forward by journalist Makarios Drousiotis of a network involving senior Cypriot judicial, political and financial figures. All those named have denied wrongdoing. Evidence has been sent to Europol’s cybercrime laboratories for forensic examination.
“I had a briefing from the Police Chief, based on what we had said the previous time, and tomorrow I will brief the Cabinet on what is to happen regarding this case,” Fytiris said.
Asked whether he had already formed a view on what he would recommend, Fytiris said he would study the matter first. “I have the obligation to brief the Cabinet and make a recommendation, and from there the Council of Ministers will take decisions,” he said.
When asked about his position on the possible appointment of an independent criminal investigator, Fytiris said: “We will see tomorrow after the discussion in Cabinet.”
