A 26-year-old driver who collided with a police officer on a bicycle in Limassol while trying to escape a traffic check, then fled the scene, has admitted in writing to all the traffic offences under investigation, philenews understands. He gave no explanation for his actions.

He is due to appear before the Limassol District Court on Monday, where the case against him is expected to be filed. A second case, relating to a drug test, will also be filed, as he could not previously be found to be served with it.

The incident happened shortly after 10am on Saturday on Anexartisias Street. According to the information being examined, a member of the police cycle patrol signalled to the driver to stop for a traffic check, but he sped up and tried to get away.

The officer followed him and signalled again for him to stop, and the car collided with his bicycle.

The driver left the scene without helping the injured officer. Police said he drove off dangerously at high speed, at one point on the wrong side of the road, and allegedly ran a red light.

The officer went to a private clinic in Limassol, where he was found to have leg and neck injuries. He was treated and discharged later the same day.

Police established that the car was registered to the 26-year-old, who was found shortly before 11am on Sunday. He was arrested on a court warrant and remanded in custody for questioning.
