Police have arrested a 44-year-old police officer and a 54-year-old lawyer in connection with the escape of a 49-year-old detainee from a private clinic in Larnaca on December 22.
The arrests were made at the suspects’ homes in Larnaca early today following a court-issued warrant. The development comes after two police officers were suspended by Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis in relation to the escape.
Both suspects are being held on charges including assisting the escape of a person in lawful custody, conspiracy to commit a felony, corrupt transactions with agents, and abuse of power.
The arrests confirm a report by philenews yesterday which suggested the possibility of an accomplice who aided the escapee.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Larnaca District Court today for a detention order hearing.
