The fourteen units provided by the United Arab Emirates, meant as a temporary solution to the island’s severe and progressively worsening water shortage issue, arrived on schedule yesterday afternoon, according to an Agriculture Ministry statement.

They have been assigned to the areas most in need and their transport will begin tomorrow in cooperation with technical personnel from the construction company that have been working accordingly in Cyprus since early May.

The priority are Limassol and Paphos due to increasing water needs as a result of the prolonged drought.

Limassol will see the installation of units with 13.650 cubic metres maximum capacity, with a total of 3.350 cubic metres capacity units in Paphos.

The Agriculture ministry is also working towards installing mobile desalination units in the Garyllis area and the Limassol port, as well as Kissonerga and Kouklia in Paphos, with a total capacity of 25 thousand cubic metres.

The Water Development Department is speeding up the infrastructure processes so the units can actually start producing water by late June. Additional mobile units will come into play later in the year as temporary solutions, with the government intensifying efforts for permanent ways of solving the water shortage issue.

In a relevant statement, the Agriculture ministry expressed thanks to the UAE for its immediate response and strategic cooperation as a tangible result of Nicosia’s effective foreign policy, strengthening bilateral relations and also producing positive results on the home front.
