Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis on Friday dismissed a viral video circulating online as fake and artificially generated, after footage emerged purporting to show a conversation between President Christodoulides and a journalist.
Letymbiotis described the video as “false and fabricated using artificial intelligence” in a post on X, stating it “does not correspond to any real conversation or event.”
The spokesman characterised the content as “AI-generated”.
Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence to create realistic but fabricated audio and video content, often featuring public figures in situations that never occurred.
Letymbiotis added that whilst technology and AI capabilities are unlimited, certain aspects require particular attention. “We need to cultivate a culture of additional critical thinking and responsible attitude towards the information we receive and reproduce,” he noted.
The government is monitoring the case in cooperation with relevant authorities and will take all necessary action, Letymbiotis added.
“The answer is one: vigilance, valid and timely information,” he concluded.
