Cyprus faces drought conditions with minimal rainfall forecast in March

The Eastern Mediterranean region, including Cyprus, faces drought conditions over the next 12 days with rainfall expected to remain significantly below seasonal averages, according to a Climate Watch Advisory from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

Weather experts predict most affected areas will receive less than 10mm of precipitation between March 10-21, with some locations recording no rainfall at all, exacerbating already dry conditions across the region.

“Due to the relatively dry conditions that prevailed in previous weeks, soil moisture and river levels are still quite low,” an advisory from the Cyprus Department of Meteorology stated, warning that winter crops may be underdeveloped and natural water supplies will decrease significantly.

The drought warning covers Cyprus, Turkey, Syria, and Eastern Ukraine, with meteorologists expressing high confidence in their projections, estimating 70-90% accuracy for the March 10-15 period and 60-80% for March 16-21.

Weekly climate simulations conducted by the German Meteorological Service (DWD), in collaboration with French and Russian meteorological agencies, confirm the trend of reduced weekly rainfall across Europe.
