Cyprus experienced hottest June on record amidst European heatwave

June 2024 was the hottest June on record in Cyprus since the Meteorological Department began collecting climatological data, amidst a heatwave that impacted much of Europe.

Preliminary data reveals that 43 out of 52 automated weather stations operated by the Meteorological Department recorded their highest-ever maximum temperatures for June. This trend was particularly notable in mountainous areas, where 14 out of 16 stations at altitudes between 600m and 1650m saw record-breaking temperatures.

Similarly, all 11 foothill stations (300m-600m) experienced their highest-ever June maximum temperatures. While 7 out of 25 lowland stations (below 300m) did not break records, the overall data confirms June 2024 as the hottest on record across all areas of Cyprus.

“This June was not only the hottest June ever recorded in Cyprus for lowland or low-altitude areas but also for the foothill and mountainous areas of the island,” the Meteorological Department stated.

Analysis of key reference stations shows that daily average maximum, minimum, and overall temperatures were the highest ever recorded for June.

Coastal stations saw average maximum temperatures of 3.6 to 4.1 degrees Celsius above normal, while the interior station recorded a deviation of 5.7 degrees Celsius. Prodromos, a mountainous station, experienced a 5.6 degrees Celsius deviation.

Average minimum temperatures also soared above normal, with coastal stations experiencing deviations between 3.2 and 4.9 degrees Celsius. Prodromos recorded a significant deviation of 4.7 degrees Celsius above normal.
