The landscape is changing in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone

Relevant News

The Republic of Cyprus, ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy recently signed a tradability statement for the Glaucus and Pegasus gas fields. This marks a significant step forward in Cyprus’ energy programme.

It is clear evidence — a vote of confidence — in the prospects of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone, and in the wider Eastern Mediterranean as a potential energy corridor for Europe.

John Ardill, Vice President of Exploration and New Business Activities at ExxonMobil, provided a telling example. While in Nicosia for the signing and meetings — including with the President of the Republic — he indicated that the company expects the final investment decision for the Glaucus and Pegasus fields to be made in 2029, with production starting in 2033.

He also spoke about broader exploration in Blocks Four and Ten A, outlining the next steps. The first move will be the reprocessing of existing seismic data to improve the subsurface image, which will then inform the prospect inventory and the likely path to drilling. There is clearly still a long way to go and considerable work before drilling can proceed in these offshore blocks.

Declaring the fields tradable clearly signals their transition to the next phase of development. This establishes the conditions for Cyprus to begin exploiting its natural resources.

These developments come at a time when regional dynamics demand energy strategy recalibrations, while simultaneously highlighting the critical need for energy security.

It is evident that progress is accelerating, and this is the new reality — one that must be managed calmly and without exaggeration.

It is worth recalling that Cyprus’ first discovery in its Exclusive Economic Zone was in 2011. Many years have passed since then. Now, following these recent developments, it is clear that the moment to capitalise on the country’s natural resources is approaching — thanks to sustained political, diplomatic, and technical efforts. Regional cooperation and partnerships with relevant companies have also played a crucial role in reaching this point.
