Cyprus’s Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas warned on Wednesday that continued Turkish violations of the UN buffer zone could lead to incidents resulting in casualties, and called on the United Nations to take additional measures to stop the provocations.
Speaking on state radio, Palmas said a high frequency of buffer zone violations had been recorded recently, not only in Avlona but also in Pyla.
He said the situation in the Pyla area was more serious, as Turkish forces had attempted to gain ground within the buffer zone.
Palmas said the occupying forces were acting unlawfully and that the United Nations needed to take a firmer stance. “In Pyla they acted in time, but the United Nations must reflect on this and take additional measures, as this situation cannot continue,” he said.
He called on the UN to hold Turkey accountable, saying the violations are typically carried out by the Turkish military.
Palmas warned that if the provocations continue, incidents could occur at some point with a visible risk of casualties.
