The United Nations moved swiftly to limit the damage after the blunder committed by Deputy Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo, who allowed the flag of the secessionist entity to be displayed at her meeting with the occupation leader, Tufan Erhurman, in Antalya. Pressure from Nicosia, a series of strongly worded démarches, and the very real prospect of the UN Deputy Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix’s visit to Cyprus being blown up entirely, forced the international organisation into a public clarification.
Ms DiCarlo, along with the other members of the Secretary-General’s team, is in the final stretch before her departure. All of them will be leaving around the end of the year, when their mandates expire.
