Arson attempts are continuing across Cyprus, after a fire that killed two people and destroyed 191 homes, with Fire Chief Nikos Longinos confirming a car was seen setting fires yesterday at Panagia Bridge in Orounta.

The fire chief told state broadcaster CyBC that multiple regions have experienced attempted fire-starting incidents in recent days, with all information forwarded to police for investigation. “Even yesterday, some were trying to start fires. A car was seen setting fire. We are seeing this phenomenon recently, which is why we ask people to give us information,” Longinos said.

Police spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou confirmed that investigations into the causes of the deadly fires in Limassol are ongoing, with Morphou police station examining the latest report from the fire chief regarding the attempted arson in the Orounta area.

When asked about arrests resulting from police patrols in fire-affected areas, Lambrianidou said no arrests have been made for the fires as there is currently insufficient information to permit such action. She added that no arrests have been made in connection with looting or theft incidents at damaged properties.

The wildfire has devastated fifteen villages, completely burning homes and leaving communities without electricity or water supply. Longinos emphasised the challenging operational environment facing emergency responders, stating: “We are trying to extinguish such a large fire and some continue to set fires. This attempt has been observed in many areas in recent days.”

The fire chief warned that the blaze’s extensive coverage requires vigilance against any flare-ups.
