The public confrontation between Donald Trump and Elon Musk took an unexpected turn yesterday. Musk, via the X platform, accused Trump of deliberately concealing the full release of the Epstein files because his own name is included in them. “Mark this post for the future. The truth will emerge,” the Tesla magnate notably wrote, though without providing evidence.

The accusation triggered a new round of pressure on the government, not only due to its seriousness but also because Trump’s relationship with the notorious financier and convicted pedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, is well-documented, even if it’s currently downplayed.
“He liked beautiful women as much as I do”

Trump’s friendship with Epstein dates back to the late 1980s. The two men moved in the same high society circles, traveled between New York and Palm Beach on private jets, attended events together at Mar-a-Lago, and hosted parties with young women.
In 2002, Trump told New York Magazine about Epstein: “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it, Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”
This phrase has remained etched in the political memory of the USA as indicative of the atmosphere of an era where excess, ostentatious wealth, and luxury served as political and social capital, as well as an… aphrodisiac for young beauties.
Videos, Testimonies, and Flight Lists
Archival material from 1992 shows Trump and Epstein standing by the runway at Mar-a-Lago, parading women and commenting on their movements. In the same year, a Florida businessman organized a “calendar girls” competition on behalf of Trump, only to discover that the only guests were Trump and Epstein.
During Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial in 2021, a woman who testified under the pseudonym “Jane” stated that, at the age of 14, she was taken to meet Trump at Mar-a-Lago. She did not report inappropriate behavior, but this testimony added to the circumstantial evidence.
Trump has categorically denied visiting Epstein’s private island or boarding his private jet. However, court documents show him having traveled seven times on the plane, along with Marla Maples, their daughter Tiffany, and his son Eric.
From “Terrific Guy” to Distancing
The Trump-Epstein friendship appears to have soured in 2004 when they competed for the purchase of a property in Palm Beach. Since then, Trump claims he banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago because Epstein attempted to approach a club employee.
In 2019, after Epstein’s arrest, Trump stated: “I wasn’t a fan of his. We had a falling out many years ago.”
However, when Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in 2020, the American president caused surprise by saying: “I wish her well, whatever that means.”
This statement fueled suspicions about whether Trump still maintained ties with individuals involved in the case, or merely avoided taking a stance.
The Epstein Files and the White House’s Silence
The Epstein case involves one of the largest child sex trafficking rings in US history. Despite the partial release of the files in 2024, thousands of pages remain sealed. Although Trump had promised to proceed with their publication, progress has been remarkably slow and only piecemeal.
The FBI states that it is examining tens of thousands of documents and proceeding with declassifications, while simultaneously protecting victims and ongoing investigations. However, Musk’s accusation that the delay is due to Trump being included in the files casts a “shadow” over governmental credibility and strengthens the question: why haven’t all the Epstein files been revealed, and what role has the Trump presidency played in this?
Trump’s phrase about Epstein—”he likes women as much as I do”—haunts the White House today. Musk’s allegations may be exaggerated or politically motivated. Perhaps not. The only certainty is that as long as the files remain sealed, the shadow of doubt will weigh heavily on both the president and the political life of the United States.
