A 42-year-old driver was sentenced to a €1,200 fine and a driving ban for five weekends after being convicted of speeding in connection with a fatal collision that killed cyclist Andreas Iakovou in Limassol in November 2020.
The Limassol court imposed the financial penalty along with five penalty points and a five-weekend driving licence suspension. The defendant was acquitted of causing death through reckless, careless or dangerous conduct under Article 210 of the Criminal Code.
The driver was found guilty of excessive speeding, travelling at 90 kilometres per hour in a 50 km/h zone on 28th October Avenue during the incident.
According to evidence presented in court, the collision occurred on 7 November 2020 when the defendant struck the 62-year-old cyclist whilst driving eastbound on the coastal road near the city’s public garden. The victim was crossing the road from north to south when he entered the carriageway.
Traffic police investigations determined Iakovou was attempting to cross ahead of the traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossing when the collision occurred. The impact caused fatal head injuries.
