A series of development projects worth over €130 million are set to transform Larnaca over the next two years, following the collapse of a €1.2 billion port and marina development deal in 2024.
The centrepiece is a new public university faculty for marine sciences, technology and sustainable development, to be built next to the old Larnaca airport behind the Mackenzie Beach parking area. The €20 million project, funded by the government and EU, awaits cabinet approval in 2025.
The city’s marina will undergo a €30 million renovation, including dredging works starting in 2025. The municipality will launch an architectural competition this year for a yacht club building and landscaping, with construction expected to begin next year. The Centre of Marine and Maritime Research Innovation (CMMI) will temporarily manage the facility until an investor is found.
Five projects totalling over €20 million will be completed this year, including the Tsiakkilero refugee settlement recreation park (€2.3m), Pattichion Park (€6.7m), the police director’s residence (€1.3m), an elderly care home (€6m), and flood channel improvements in Livadia (€3.8m).
Four additional projects worth €34.6 million will commence this year and finish by 2026, including a €23 million sustainable urban mobility plan introducing park-and-ride facilities and cycling lanes. The renovation of Livadia’s core area (€3.6m) and the historic Agios Ioannis quarter (€8m) will also begin in 2025.
The commercial centre’s transformation, costing €13.3 million, is progressing on schedule with work on historic squares and pedestrian zones due for completion by late 2026. The €17 million third phase of the Larnaca-Dhekelia road project is expected to finish next year.
Three major projects worth €18.5 million face delays, including the old hospital conversion (€10.5m), the Archaeological Park (€4m), and the Salt Lakes Environmental Information Centre (€4m), with the latter scheduled to begin construction in 2027.
