Larnaca Municipality is buzzing with activity as preparations are underway for numerous projects set to kick off in 2024.
The announcement came days ago from Mayor Andreas Vyras, signaling the initiation of processes for the maturation of approximately 15 new projects, in addition to those scheduled to commence within the same year.
In January, according to Vyras, the Department of Public Works will launch a tender for the study of the recovery of the newly liberated three-kilometer-long beach.
Simultaneously, the dismantling of the Intergaz liquid gas facilities will begin, clearing the area completely. Ground cleanup on the premises of other companies will also continue.
The municipality’s goal for the new year, according to Mayor Vyras, is to mature new projects to tap into more European funds, either from the THALIA Program 2021-2027 or the next programming period.
“The key to success for a municipality is to constantly have mature projects,” emphasized Mayor Vyras, outlining the planned projects. These include the redesign of Vasilis Pavlos Square near the Phinikoudes area and the restoration of the old REX cinema, transforming it into a Cinema Center.
Additionally, a third project for the redevelopment of the commercial center (AmA 3) is in the works, with its second phase set to begin early in the new year. The maturation of the second phase of the consolidation of archaeological sites is also on the agenda.
One of Larnaca Municipality’s most ambitious plans is the creation of social housing for individuals with low incomes, with potential locations being examined in the Turkish Cypriot neighborhood of Scala.
Furthermore, a call for an international competition for the complete redevelopment of the Phinikoudes coastal front is scheduled for the second half of 2024. Plans also include the extension of works for the redevelopment of Ayios Ioannis, expected to start in 2024, and upgrades to the Makentzi coastal front and the Tekke campsite.
Initiatives for the construction of a photovoltaic park, the renovation of city cultural spaces, and the establishment of the Larnaca People’s Museum are also in the pipeline.
In addition to projects entering the maturation phase, 2024 holds particular significance for Larnaca, as major developments in the marina and port are set to commence in May.
Moreover, within the year, the implementation of projects under the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, two projects related to the commercial center, the redevelopment of the old hospital to house municipal services, and the construction of the Melathron Evygerias will begin, among other initiatives.
