Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer held wide-ranging talks on bilateral cooperation during Starmer’s working visit to Cyprus on Tuesday, marking the first visit by a British premier to the island nation in 53 years.

The historic meeting, which comes amid expanding relations between the two countries, focused on strengthening bilateral ties ahead of their second Strategic Dialogue.

Discussions covered security and defence cooperation, education, culture, economy, investments, trade relations, clean energy, and migration.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with current bilateral relations and affirmed their joint commitment to further enhancement through coordinated actions.

The talks extensively addressed regional issues, particularly developments in Syria and potential implications for the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.

The leaders acknowledged Cyprus’s humanitarian role in the region, including its provision of aid and assistance in evacuating civilians from conflict zones.

A key focus of the discussions was the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and Christodoulides’s efforts to restart negotiations for resolving the Cyprus problem.

The Cypriot president briefed Starmer on developments following his meeting with the UN Secretary-General and the Turkish Cypriot leader in New York, and on an upcoming expanded meeting.

The discussions highlighted Britain’s significant role as a guarantor power and penholder for resolutions within the UN Security Council regarding the Cyprus issue.
