Less than two months after their meeting in London, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer are set to meet again, this time in Nicosia, marking a significant milestone in bilateral relations.

The British Prime Minister’s one-day working visit on Tuesday, part of a regional tour, is the first bilateral trip to Cyprus by a UK premier since Edward Heath’s visit in 1971. While John Major visited in 1993, that occasion was tied to a Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

The meeting is seen as a pivotal moment in the evolving Cyprus-UK relationship, which has entered a new phase of strategic cooperation. Discussions will begin with a private meeting between the two leaders, followed by expanded talks with delegations.

Key Agenda Items
Talks will center on bilateral ties under the Cyprus-UK Strategic Dialogue, encompassing defense and security collaboration, education, culture, trade, investment, and energy.

The Cyprus issue and efforts to resume negotiations will be a focal point, particularly in light of ongoing attempts to convene an informal multilateral meeting involving the UK.

Other agenda items include migration, the Ukraine crisis, EU-UK relations, and regional developments. The two leaders will also address Cyprus’s historical role in providing humanitarian aid and its recent initiatives, such as the “Amalthea” project and the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones.

The UK National Federation of Cypriots welcomed Starmer’s visit in a social media post, underscoring the significance of the occasion for the Cypriot community in Britain.

The UK Prime Minister has commenced a multi-day tour of Gulf and Middle Eastern countries, beginning on Sunday with a visit to the United Arab Emirates. On Monday, he is scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia, according to Reuters.
