Questions have been raised about safety and fire protection measures at a factory in Dromolaxia where a 63-year-old worker died in a fire, forensic pathologist Marios Matsakis said Thursday.
Matsakis, who represented the victim’s family during the post-mortem examination and conducted a site inspection, described the incident location as a “death trap” and called for a broad review of safety measures across all factories operating in Cyprus.
“The victim was trapped in his workspace with apparently no escape route, as there were no adequate conditions for evacuation during a fire of this magnitude”, Matsakis told reporters following his site inspection.
The coroner emphasised the need for a thorough examination of protection measures and inspection protocols at all industrial facilities currently operating in Cyprus.
He had attended yesterday’s autopsy as the family’s representative and today conducted an on-site investigation where the death occurred.
