The Cabinet has given the final green light to the Akamas Local Plan, incorporating minor changes following a review of public objections.
The plan, which covers several communities in the Paphos district, has been subject to a lengthy approval process, including a review by an expert committee. Despite 613 objections, mostly from individuals, the committee recommended only minor adjustments to the plan, which was initially published in 2023.
The Environmental Authority has also concluded that the proposed changes will not have a significant impact on the environment and do not require a Strategic Environmental Assessment.
To boost local economic activity, the plan includes provisions for a new livestock farming zone in Neo Chorio and an industrial area in Inia. However, to protect the nearby Natura 2000 site, any development within the livestock farming zone will be subject to an environmental impact assessment.
The Akamas Local Plan has been a subject of intense public debate, with environmental groups expressing worry about potential negative impacts on the region’s biodiversity and natural beauty. Concerns have been raised about the potential for overdevelopment, increased traffic, and damage to sensitive ecosystems.
Some local communities have expressed support for the plan, hoping it will bring economic benefits to the region. Others have concerns about the impact on traditional livelihoods and the character of the area.
