The fire broke out shortly after 8 a.m., while five people were present in the plant. Four workers managed to escape, one of whom suffered burns on his hand. All four were taken to Larnaca General Hospital for respiratory issues, with the injured worker still receiving care for burn-related injuries. The missing individual was reportedly working in a separate section of the facility and was unable to evacuate in time as the blaze spread rapidly.
Fire services responded with full force, deploying extensive resources to contain the flames. Police blocked off access to roads surrounding the plant due to the risk of explosions. Dense black smoke filled the air, visible for hours in Larnaca and neighboring communities, drawing attention to the scope of the emergency.
According to Fire Service spokesperson Loginos, the intense heat generated by the petroleum-based materials fueled the fire’s swift expansion. Firefighters are concentrating efforts on full containment before beginning a thorough investigation inside the site. Minister of Justice officials and representatives from multiple agencies, including Cyprus’ Electricity Authority, Labour Inspection Department, and Civil Defence, are on the scene.
Dense black smoke continues to be visible across Larnaca.
