Residents of Konia, Paphos, have voiced concerns over a 5G mobile phone tower recently installed near homes and a primary school, leading to a discussion in the House Education Committee.
Elli Katsiartou, a resident, gave testimony to the committee, describing the tower’s proximity to her home: “It’s inside my house. Outside our windows. In my yard. We eat with it, we sleep with it. We live in fear.”
The issue was brought to the committee’s attention by MP Chrysanthos Savvides, following reactions from residents and parents worried about potential health effects on children attending the nearby primary school.
Katsiartou claimed that after her complaints, two responsible bodies conducted measurements and found “there was a problem”, though she did not elaborate on the nature of this problem.
Kyriakos Kyriakou, deputy mayor of Konia, stated that the local authority was not notified about the tower’s placement, as permission is granted solely by the Town Planning Department and District Administration.
However, relevant services maintain there is no scientific evidence linking serious health problems to 5G technology, asserting it is safer than previous technologies. They reported no dangerously high measurements at this specific location.
A representative from the company owning the tower assured the committee that emissions were low and that all required permits were obtained in strict adherence to legislative frameworks.
