Healthcare workers in Cyprus’s state hospitals are preparing to announce a date for a 24-hour strike, with six unions representing them scheduled to hold a press conference this Friday.
The planned industrial action stems from a lack of progress in negotiations for a collective agreement and what the unions describe as a “provocative stance” by the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO).
Prodromos Argyrides, president of the nursing branch of PASYDY (Pancyprian Public Employees Trade Union) said SHSO has not responded to their intention to take measures, which was announced several days ago.
Argyrides highlighted a pattern of postponed meetings, including one scheduled for June that was cancelled at the last minute by SHSO. A subsequent meeting planned for September 5 was also cancelled on September 4, with SHSO citing that its board of directors had not had time to study the organisation’s proposals.
“The collective agreement is particularly important for the workers,” Argyrides stated. He added that the unions have decided to proceed with the press conference to explain the reasons for the industrial action and to announce the date of the 24-hour strike, citing a loss of trust in SHSO.
