Tensions between Greece and Cyprus are mounting over a proposed electrical interconnection project, as Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis prepares to meet Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in Athens today.

Greek media outlets report that the Greek government is dissatisfied with decisions made by Cyprus on Tuesday regarding the electrical link between the two countries. The issue is expected to dominate discussions at the 11 a.m. meeting in the Maximos Mansion.

According to energypress.gr, a website specialising in energy issues, the Greek government is displeased with the content of the decision made by the Cypriot Council of Ministers. Euro2day, an economic news site, claims that Athens conveyed its dissatisfaction to the Cypriot President yesterday.

Greek government sources, cited by Euro2day, reportedly stated, “Under these conditions, Greece is not willing to continue paying for the project. Nicosia must make a definitive decision on whether it wants it or not.”

The Greek side is particularly concerned that the Christodoulides government has not committed to participating in the interconnection investment by purchasing shares in the Great Sea Interconnector.

Today’s meeting between Mitsotakis and Christodoulides is seen as crucial in determining the future of the interconnection project. The Cypriot President has been in the Greek capital since yesterday.
