President Christodoulides’s visit to Athens on Thursday and his meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be a significant event for the week, with two main issues expected to dominate the agenda.
First, the Cyprus-Greece electricity interconnection will be discussed, including the latest developments following President Christodoulides’s visit to the United Arab Emirates.
Last Thursday, the President expressed optimism about progress in the cable construction and mentioned his daily communication with Prime Minister Mitsotakis. Announcements on this matter may be made by both leaders.
Second, the Cyprus issue and any potential developments in light of the contacts on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly will be addressed. Nicosia and Athens will coordinate their efforts, including separate meetings with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
It is known that Athens and Ankara maintain an open channel of communication to facilitate developments.
After the failure to organise a tripartite meeting in August, the new target is to hold a meeting in the second half of October. There are also behind-the-scenes efforts to reach an agreement for the two leaders to meet with Antonio Guterres.
The two leaders are expected to discuss information mentioned in yesterday’s philenews publication, regarding Turkey’s proposal for a four-way meeting, including Greece, Turkey, and both sides in Cyprus, in an attempt to indirectly upgrade the north’s standing.
In New York, the UN Secretary-General is expected to make a new move to sound out the two sides for a meeting in mid-October.
