Cyprus has requisitioned 18 schools as a precaution against a potential influx of refugees from the war in the Middle East.
Two schools, one each in Larnaca and Limassol, have had beds installed in their multi-purpose halls, primarily to care for potential casualties should the conflict intensify, as part of the government’s ‘Estia’ plan.
The remaining 16 schools have been notified of their requisition status but have seen no physical changes.
The decision, made jointly by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, and Civil Defence, initially sparked concern, particularly in schools where beds were placed, as these facilities are often used for after-school activities.
Marina Ioannou-Chasapi, Director-General of the Ministry of Education, told Philenews that instructions have been given to relocate the beds to allow normal use of the halls.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Theodoros Gotsis, clarified that the placement of beds in Larnaca schools is not a response to immediate indications of the Gaza war expanding to Lebanon.
He acknowledged the potential disruptions to physical education classes but emphasised that this is a temporary precaution. He also expressed confidence that Cypriots, given their own experiences, would understand the need to offer refuge.
Civil Defence spokesperson Panagiotis Liasides confirmed the moves were purely precautionary.
The ‘Estia’ plan forms part of Cyprus’s strategy to prepare for potential regional instability, drawing on the island’s geographical proximity to the Middle East.
