China’s customs authorities have announced the implementation of preventive measures to enhance the surveillance of people and goods entering the country from states or regions where cases of mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) have been confirmed. These measures will be in place for a period of six months.
As part of these efforts, travellers from countries where mpox outbreaks have been recorded will be required to provide a written declaration stating whether they have had contact with symptomatic patients or if they are experiencing any symptoms themselves.
Additionally, vehicles, containers, and goods originating from the affected states and regions will undergo disinfection processes, according to a press release from the customs service.
It is noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global alert for mpox following the surge in cases across several African countries.
